Successful Defense of a Level 5 (TRIZ Master) Thesis

On 23 December 2025, MATRIZ held the public online defense of a Level 5 (TRIZ Master) thesis entitled “Patent analysis methodology for validating and developing the Trends of Engineering Systems Evolution”,

authored by Dr. Sergey Yatsunenko (Poland) and Dr. Yue (Alp) Lin (China).

Following the presentation and discussion, the TRIZ Master Certification Council (TMCC) conducted a formal vote. The result was unanimously positive, with 8 votes in favor and 0 against. Both candidates were approved for TRIZ Master (Level 5) certification.

The defended thesis addresses a long-standing methodological gap in TRIZ. Although TRIZ was built on patent analysis, the methodology of patent search itself had never been formally systematized. The authors proposed and validated the first patent search methodology explicitly adapted to the conceptual framework of TRIZ, enabling systematic verification and further development of the Trends of Engineering Systems Evolution.

This defense was also an important milestone for MATRIZ. It was the first Level 5 thesis defended as a joint work and the first Level 5 defense conducted fully online. The multi-year certification process highlighted the need to adapt existing regulations to modern research and collaboration practices. As a result, MATRIZ has initiated work on updating the Level 5 certification regulations. Further information will follow.

Congratulations to the newly certified TRIZ Masters:
Dr. Sergey Yatsunenko and Dr. Yue (Alp) Lin.
